Erik Ten Hag's exit from Manchester United was described as "emotional" by his interim replacement Ruud van Nistelrooy
After Erik ten Hag's departure from Manchester United earlier this week, interim manager Ruud van Nistelrooy opened up about Ten Hag’s reaction and the emotions surrounding his exit.
Ten Hag, who led United for over two years, was dismissed on Monday and quickly returned to his hometown in the Netherlands, where he has since been reflecting on his tenure.
Van Nistelrooy opens up on Ten Hag’s final moments
Manchester United’s interim Dutch manager explained that Ten Hag was disappointed and “hurt” by the club’s decision.
Speaking about the last time he saw ten Hag, van Nistelrooy said, "He was disappointed and touched because he really cared for the club.
“From our first conversations, I could see he loved United and was determined to move the club forward. That’s why he’s also hurt that he had to leave but also proud of his achievement here winning the two cups.”
Van Nistelrooy was at the training ground on Monday when Chief Executive Omar Berrada and Sporting Director Dan Ashworth informed Ten Hag of his dismissal. The Dutchman then flew to his family home in Oldenzaal, where his parents provided comfort.
Van Nistelrooy's focus shifts to stabilizing interim role
Despite the difficult transition, Van Nistelrooy quickly shifted his focus to leading the team, overseeing a decisive 5-2 victory over Leicester City in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday.
"It was very disappointing that Erik had to leave, but then you have to switch the mindset to win," van Nistelrooy said, adding, "I am here to help the club forward, and I’m very motivated to do so, whether as an assistant or interim."
Van Nistelrooy’s next big test as Manchester United’s interim manager will come against Chelsea when the Red Devils host the Blues this weekend, hoping to improve their 14th position on the Premier League table.
