Football fans witnessed a bizarre moment from Ronald Araujo during the LaLiga game between Barcelona and Getafe.

Barcelona’s attempt to defend their La Liga title got off to a dismal start as they were held to a draw by their opponents Getafe in a physical game.

During the game, Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo committed a football rule violation as he thought he was playing Basketball.

The defender made a bizarre mistake by catching the ball like a goalkeeper during the game which came as a shock to everyone.

The watching fans in the stadium and at home were dumbfounded by Araujo's moment as many reacted to the situation.

Araujo’s moment

Barcelona played a goalless draw against Getafe with both teams ending the game with ten men each. 

Raphinha was sent off by the referee after elbowing Getafe player Gaston Alvarez while Getafe midfielder Jaime Mata got sent off for a second booking.

The remarkable moment of the game was the Araujo attempted to chest the ball but instead caught the ball with both hands.

The Uruguayan on the right side received a chipped pass that was overhit early in the second half.

To the surprise of his teammates, he leapt up and caught the ball as it appeared to be going over his head.

As soon as Araujo realised what he had done, he quickly displayed a look of shame and put his palm on his head before jogging back into position.

Araujo escaped without being booked, despite the protest from Getafe players, with the referee awarding a free-kick.

Fans reactions

The incident has caused a lot of reaction from fans on social media and the Sun reported some of those comments.

Reacting to the incident, one fan tweeted, "Can’t believe he got away without a card there."

Another wrote, "What was he thinking?!"

A third viewer fumed, "What a shocking piece of football… Araujo and the ref both had a brain fart."

Meanwhile, one more simply commented, "La Liga is a shambles."

Another fan said, "Araujo channelling his inner Michael Jordan.”
