Spurs raced into an early lead, scoring inside three minutes when Micky Van de Ven ran up the pitch to set up Brennan Johnson, who finished expertly.
The Red Devils had chances to get back into the game but were wasteful with the opportunities that came their way. Their prospects of drawing level took a hit after Fernandes was shown red just before halftime for a tackle on Mason Mount.
Ange Postecoglou’s side capitalised in the second-half, scoring almost immediately after resumption thanks to a Dejan Kulusevski strike. New signing Dominic Solanke closed off the scoring in the 77th minute to help Tottenham win 3-0.
What Ten Hag said
“It is a bad start of the game; Tottenham were dominant; we made many mistakes in possession that we should not make,” he said, per the BBC.
“We couldn’t pass out of the press and made wrong decisions. We had chances to come back and then the red card changed the game.
"I don’t think it was a red card. It was only 1-0; we could have made a comeback and it had a big impact on the game.”
