Ademola Lookman was the star of the show as Atalanta hammered Napoli
Nigerian forward Ademola Lookman opened up on his pride at seeing his Atalanta side dismantle Serie A log leaders Napoli in an emphatic 3-0 win.
Lookman played a starring role in Atalanta's emphatic 3-0 win over Serie A leaders Napoli, netting an early brace that set the tone for La Dea’s victory at the Diego Maradona Stadium and was excited at the result and performance against the 2023 champions.
Lookman Reflects on team performance
Speaking to DAZN after the match, Lookman praised his team’s collective effort, acknowledging the difficulty of taking three points away from the league leaders.
“It was a big performance from the team, we’re happy, and three points away to the leaders is never easy, so we’re proud of that,” Lookman said after beating one of Serie A’s most challenging teams.
Lookman’s presence has been central to Atalanta’s success, which now includes a run of five consecutive league victories, with 18 goals scored and only two conceded in that spell.
During Atalanta’s superb run of five games, Lookman has contributed four goals and three assists to drive his side to second place on the Serie A table.
Staying focused amid individual recognition
Earlier this week, Lookman attended the Ballon d’Or ceremony in Paris, where he finished in 14th place, a recognition he credits largely to his Europa League Final hat-trick against Bayer Leverkusen.
While Lookman values individual accolades, he remains grounded, looking for more team accolades instead.
Speaking about his Ballon d’Or placement after becoming the first Atalanta player to be nominated for the award, Lookman said, “Individual achievements are part of football, but this is a team game, my squad helps me a lot. I continue working and try to help the team when I can.”
Lookman will have the opportunity to earn additional individual honours in December when he competes for the CAF Player of the Year award, for which he is a favourite.
