Inter send Atalanta packing: Africa's finest Lookman benched as club's gamble fails in Super Cup
Nigeria's Ademola Lookman started the Italian Cup semis between Atalanta and Inter Milan on the bench.
United’s 2-0 defeat at home was their fourth consecutive loss in the Premier League, with Ruben Amorim’s Red Devils failing to register a single goal in three of those matches.
Mikel did not hold back in his assessment, labelling the team's display against the Magpies as ‘awful to watch.’
In a video posted on his Instagram page, he stated, “Even if you’re not a Man United fan, it’s awful to watch,” and noted that Newcastle could have easily scored three goals within the first 20 minutes of the match.”
Despite his harsh critique of the team's performance, Mikel exonerated manager Ruben Amorim, who took charge in November.
The former Super Eagles captain praised Amorim as a "fantastic manager" and emphasised that the issues lie more with the players than with the coaching staff.
“Listen, it’s not the manager’s fault at all,” he added. “[Ruben] Amorim is a fantastic manager, he’s a brilliant young manager.
He specifically mentioned players like centre-back Harry Maguire and Casemiro as part of the problem, further highlighting the need for a significant overhaul within the squad.
“The players at United, I am sorry, they are nowhere near good enough to be playing at the club or to be competing anywhere top four or the Premier League,” he added. “You’re talking from [Harry] Maguire, De Ligt, Casemiro, Eriksen, it’s awful to watch.”
Meanwhile, Amorim and his United team could see their woes compounded as they travel to Anfield next to face bitter rivals and league leaders Liverpool.
