In a brutally honest post-match reaction, Giorgio Chiellini 2018 made one of football's most famous quotes after Tottenham Hotspurs' bottled' the chance to progress in the Champions League.
Tottenham was 1-0 up at Wembley and had a 3-2 aggregate lead. Still, Juventus, after an hour of play, took control of the game with Gonzalo Higuaín and Paulo Dybala goals inside three minutes.
Chiellini attributed the failure of Tottenham to their 'history'. "It's the history of Tottenham," he said.
"They always create many chances and score so much, but, in the end, they always miss something to arrive at the end."
"We believe in history. Also, in the game between Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain [which Real won] – the history and the experience are important."
"We believe until the end. We earned our luck. Tottenham had their chances and is a good team, but they're on the verge of being able to win this type of game."
"Sometimes, you need that spark, maybe a trophy win. We had our experience, and we made the most of it."
Five years later, decorated top football manager Antonio Conte was shown the exit after reiterating similar sentiments about the 'history of Tottenham'.
"The problem is we have shown we are not a team," the former Chelsea manager reportedly shouted.
"We are 11 players. I see selfish players. I see players that don't want to help each other, don't play with heart.'
"But here we are used to this for a long time. The club has the responsibility for the transfer market."
"The coaches come here and have responsibility. And the players? The players? Where are the players?"
The Italian manager added: "The players don't want to play under pressure. They don't want to play under stress."
"Tottenham's story is this. 20 years and they have yet to win something. Why? The fault is only the club or every manager that comes here?"
"Until now, I try to hide the situation. But there are ten games to go. People think we can fight? Fight for what?"
"With this attitude, this spirit, this commitment. For seventh? Eighth place? I am really upset."
History of Tottenham
The history of Tottenham is littered with a lack of mental toughness that has seen the club endure 15 years trophy-less yet with an up-and-coming squad.
In the last five years, the club has sacked three managers but has a brilliant new 60,000-seater stadium pooling in cash.
Away from the frustrations, Tottenham's trophy cabinet boasts two league titles, eight FA Cups, four League Cups, seven FA Community Shields, one European Cup Winners' Cup and two UEFA Cups.
However, the club, enjoying an array of financial deals thanks to the new stadium, could do themselves a favour and update their cabinet, last updated in 2008 with the League Cup.
