The former Gor Mahia defender feels life in Dar would have been unbearable had he not rescued a point in his first Kariakoo Derby.
Harambee Stars defender Joash Onyango believes his life in Tanzania would have been unbearable had he not scored a late equaliser for Simba SC in the Kariakoo Derby against arch-rivals Yanga in November 2020.
Having joined Simba from record Kenyan champions Gor Mahia in August of that year, Onyango got his first taste of the feisty derby that pits together Tanzania’s most successful teams but it did not go well initially as he conceded a first-half penalty that was tucked home by Yanga’s Michael Sarpong.

STARS ABROAD Harambee Stars defender Joash Onyango reflects on his third season at Simba
The former Gor Mahia defender has labeled Simba as one to forget.
The penalty arrived after Onyango had fouled Tuisila Kisinda inside the box in the 30th minute and Yanga held on until late. With four minutes remaining and Simba destined for a defeat, Onyango rose highest to score an equaliser and rescue a point for Wekundu wa Msimbazi.
Luis Miquissone brought in a corner which Onyango connected with at the back post to score through a bullet header to atone for his earlier mistake. It is a goal that earned him not just plaudits and a big following on social media, but also endeared him to Simba fans.

STARS ABROAD ‘Fake news’ - Joash Onyango refutes reports of leaving Simba
The former Gor Mahia defender has insisted that he is still committed to Wekundu wa Msimbazi following media reports that he submitted a transfer request
“My life has been good since I came here. I cannot complain, I have made a big step in my life since I came here. Shomari (Kapombe) is my best friend, there is a way we click when we’re together,” Onyango told the club’s in-house channel.
“Kapombe also talked to me about the derby and it was my first so I decided to take that challenge. That goal earned me a lot of plaudits online and I believe it took away a lot of things. It is possible there would have been a lot of abuses or criticism directed at me had we lost.”

CAF CONFEDERATION CUP ‘USM anapumulia mashine’ - Simba boss trolls Yanga for losing final to ‘relegation candidates’
The Wekundu wa Msimbazi official does not think the Tanzanian champions deserve any plaudits for their continental campaign that ended in heartbreak on Saturday
While the first season went well, Onyango winning league and cup double with Simba, he has not enjoyed success in the last two campaigns.
If anything, his relationship with supporters of the Dar es Salaam giants seems to have deteriorated following the criticism and online abuses directed at him by a section of the club’s fans following their losses to Raja and Wydad Casablanca in the CAF Champions League this season.
