The former footballer with a track record of violence has been handed a 3-month suspended prison sentence.
Joey Barton, the disgraced ex-footballer, has been found guilty of assaulting his wife, Georgia Barton, during a drunken argument at their west London home in June 2021.
Despite the serious nature of the attack, the 42-year-old former midfielder has been spared jail time, receiving a 12-week suspended prison sentence.
‘He was gonna fight with my uncle and my dad’ – Drunken row turns violent
)
Daily Mail extensively reports the incident occurred after Barton and his wife reportedly consumed ‘four or five bottles of wine.’
The row, which started over a disagreement about their families, escalated quickly.
Mrs Barton described being ‘pushed down and kicked about’ by her husband.
According to court reports, Barton grabbed Georgia and violently pushed her to the ground, before kicking her in the head, leaving her with a ‘golf ball’ sized lump on her head.
)
In a heart-wrenching 999 call played in court, Mrs Barton said, “My husband’s just hit me in the house… He’s in the house, I’m outside.” She added, “I think he’s coming outside now, he’s in the house, he’s not coming out here.”
Police body camera footage also corroborated her story, with officers noting the visible injury on her head and her account of the events.
A police officer who arrived at the scene said, “She’s got a good lump on the side of her head.” Mrs Barton was heard confirming to officers that Barton had said he “was gonna fight with my uncle and my dad” before the assault occurred.
)
Prosecutor Helena Duong told the court as per the aforementioned outlet, “It was plainly something not caused by an accident,” pointing to Mrs Barton’s bloody nose as clear evidence of the assault.
She also emphasised that Mrs Barton’s 999 call was “compelling evidence,” as it clearly described the attack.
No Escape for Barton as ex-footballer found GUILTY of assault, ordered to pay fine after escaping jail time

Chief Magistrate Paul Goldspring, who convicted Barton, is said to have criticised the couple’s inconsistent testimonies in the case.
Despite the couple’s ongoing relationship and Barton’s insistence that he did not assault his wife, the judge found his account of events ‘vague’ and ‘untruthful’.
Goldspring remarked, “I am satisfied that the defendant now relies on facts he failed to mention at the time.”
The judge rejected Mrs Barton’s later claims that the injury was caused accidentally, describing them as ‘unbelievable’.
)
Goldspring stated, “The one place your wife is entitled to feel safe and protected is her home, and the one person she is entitled to feel safe and protected by is you, and that’s not what happened in this case.”
Goldspring also said, “I believe the veracity of the first account and it is supported by other evidence… I reject the account by Mrs Barton over eight months later and repeated in the witness box by her.”
He added, “I do not accept that she drank four plus bottles of wine to herself – she was not so intoxicated.”
)
Barton, who had previously been convicted for similar offences in 2008, was handed the suspended sentence and ordered to pay £2,183 in victim surcharge and prosecution costs.
The news comes exactly one month after Barton made the headlines for his controversial verdict on the relevance of the prestigious Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Barton spoke in a video while reacting to the backlash received by former Liverpool defender turned pundit Jamie Carragher, who claimed the AFCON was not a major tournament, adding that it would be of no help to Mohamed Salah’s Ballon d’Or dream.
“I think the problem [with him being recognised as a frontrunner for the Ballon d’Or] is that he’s with Egypt, and he’s probably not playing in a major tournament or has a great chance of winning,” Carragher said.
Carragher’s comment earned pushback from footballers and ex-footballers, forcing him to backtrack on his earlier remarks.
However, Joey Barton defended the stance of his fellow Englishman in the debate, stating that AFCON is not on the same level as similar continental tournaments in Europe, South America, and the World Cup.
)
“The Africa Cup of Nations isn’t a major championship. Copa América, the European Championship, and the World Cup are your major international tournaments. Unfortunately, AFCON isn’t one of them,” he stated.
Barton went ahead to claim the quality of pitches, attendance and bribery allegations overshadowed the quality of the tournament.
