Kenyan striker John Makwata has been lured to Tanzania after an impressive second half in the FKF Premier League with Kariobangi Sharks.

Kenyan striker John Makwata is close to joining Tanzanian side Coastal Union following a brilliant second half of the season with Kariobangi Sharks.

Makwata was the midseason signing of the 2023-24 campaign when he bagged 16 goals in 13 matches across all competitions for Sharks, despite joining the club in February.

His goals included four in one match, when he led Sharks to a 5-2 thrashing of Spfapaka in May, and also provided an assist, and while the Slum Boys would have loved to keep him, his exploits attracted interest from other clubs which proved difficult to resist.

Now, Coastal Union seem to have won the race for his signature and he is set to boost their squad as they prepare to compete in the CAF Confederation Cup next season.

The Tanzanian side are coached by Kenyan David Ouma, the former Sofapaka and Harambee Starlets coach, who guided them to fourth place in the league to secure continental football.

Ouma is being backed to improve on what he managed last season and Makwata’s arrival will follow the capture of Zanzibar defender Mukrim Issa and full-back Haroub Mohamed, also a Zanzibari, who have already been unveiled by the club.

Based in Tanga, a port city in northeast Tanzania, Coastal Union are one of the oldest clubs in the country, having been founded in 1948, and play their home matches at the 15,000-seater Mkwakwani Stadium.
