A ninth place finish might not be the perfect result for the women's hockey team during the ongoing Commonwealth Games but there were scenes of jubilation as they beat Ghana on penalties.
After finishing in fifth place in pool B with a 0-4 record, the Kenyan women’s hockey team found themselves up against Ghana in a battle for ninth place on Friday.
Despite not scoring any goals during the group stage, Grace Bwire stunned the Ghanian team five minutes into the opening term with a goal, marking their first for the tournament.
Nafistatu Umaru managed to respond for Ghana during the second term with a successful penalty shot from the corner to bring the scores level 1-1 at half time.
Although Ghana managed to take the lead during the third term with another penalty shot via Mavis Berko, Kenya rallied to respond during the final term via a penalty shot from Flavia Mutiva to bring the scores level once again, forcing the match into a shoot-out competition.
Despite Umaru giving Ghana some hope of a victory with the first goal, Eleanor Chebet responded with a goal of her own for Kenya in their second shot.
The shoot-out competition continued to be neck and neck with Berko scoring for Ghana and Caroline Guchu responding for Kenya.
But when the eight-second time limit ran out for Vivian Narkuor, Kenya capitalised with a Chebet shot putting them in front 3-2. It all came down to Umaru to respond for Ghana but the eight-second time limit ran out as the entire Kenyan team ran onto the court to celebrate.
