Borussia Dortmund midfielder Jude Bellingham has described the desicion to allow Kai Havertz retake a missed penalty as a “joke” after Chelsea bounced back from a first-leg loss to send the Germans out of the Champions League.
Borussia Dortmund held a 1-0 lead going into the second leg at Stamford Bridge, but they failed to build on that advantage and instead succumbed to a 2-0 defeat to Chelsea.
Raheem Sterling opened the scoring to level the tie on aggregate and Havertz made the difference with a controversial penalty that was only dispatched on the second attempt.
Marius Wolf was punished for handball in the second half and although Havertz’ initial effort from the spot struck a post, Salih Ozcan was deemed to have encroached and Havertz scored with his second try.
Bellingham calls Chelsea penalty a 'joke'
Bellingham believed Wolf was unfairly penalized after Ben Chilwell's cross struck his arm from close range, but he was particularly bemused at the penalty retake decided by VAR.
Speaking to BT Sport, Bellingham said: “I’m not sure what more Wolf can do with his hand.”
“That in itself was disappointing and the fact that they’ve had a retake, I think it’s a joke.
“For every penalty, especially when you have such a slow run-up, there’s going to be people encroaching into the box by a yard or so.
“He’s made the decision and we have to live with it.”
He added: “I don’t want to get in trouble. I’ve paid enough to them lot.”
Big picture for Chelsea
The victory over Dortmund could be just the boost Chelsea need to get their season back on track and finish strongly.
Graham Potter will especially be relieved to see his side pick up a vital win against such high-level opponents as well as create enough chances in the final third.
