Kenya’s Junior Stars assistant coach Anthony Akhulia has given an insight into how his charges are coping with the favourites tag at the ongoing CECACA U18 Championships

Kenya Junior Stars assistant coach Anthony Akhulia has explained how his team is handling the pressure of expectations having been termed favourites to win the CECACA Under-18 Boys Championships on home soil.

Junior Stars got their campaign off to a perfect start when they thrashed Sudan 5-0 in a one-sided Group A encounter in Kisumu on Saturday which further enhanced their favourites tag but Akhulia is remaining modest even though he admits there is pressure to win the title.

“Being the first match, we had to start by trying to get a win which they did but we have not accomplished anything yet. We really need to work and win our second match,” Akhulia said in his post-match press conference.

“We are playing at home which means there is too much pressure on us and everyone expects us to win this tournament. Ours is to handle it game by game.”

Kenya will take on Rwanda in their next match with Salim Babu’s boys hoping for a second straight win to seal their place in the semi-final.

Rwanda will pose some resistance given they also have three points from Group A after starting their campaign with a 1-0 victory over Somalia in Saturday’s early kick off.

“We have played Sudan and won 5-0, now we go back to the drawing board and try to win our next match against Rwanda and that is the only thing that will motivate us,” added Akhukia.

“As much as we want to win the tournament, we have to win our matches first. We have to win against Rwanda and qualify for the semis and after that we can now plan.”

Kenya have a star-studded squad which includes this year’s secondary school games heroes Aldrine Kibet, Louis Ingavi, Amos Wanjala and Alvin Kasavuli who secured places at various football academies in the United States and Europe.

While Group A matches are taking place in Kisumu, Group B, which has Tanzania, Zanzibar, South Sudan and Uganda are staging their games at Kakamega’s Bukhungu Stadium.
