The Kakamega Homeboyz club logo was the subject of some criticism on social media but the club has explained the inspiration behind the unusual design

Kakamega Homeboyz may not be making waves internationally but their logo got a rare mention among the best and worst around the world.

The Homeboyz logo, which has a ball on top of the crying stone of Kakamega and maize on either side of the crest, was lauded for its creativity but also slammed for not ‘providing much.’

“Great football club name, established in 2010, they have just massacred the Liverpool logo and attached some corn to it as well. Is actually quite a good badge technically,” said TikTok user Niran Yesufu, when ranking what he considered some of the poorly designed football club badges.

Yesufu perhaps does not understand the inspiration behind the logo as Homeboyz owner and chairman Cleophas Shimanyula said it was designed to promote Kakamega and Western Kenya as a whole.

“The logo represents the people of Kakamega. When you look at it, it has the crying stone of Kakamega and the maize,” said Shimanyula.

“The crying stone represents one of the main attractions in Kakamega and it is a huge draw for tourists so we are basically promoting our town and region.

“The maize shows that people of Kakamega and Western Kenya are farmers. That is our main crop and also our staple. The yellow and blue are our colours.”

Established in 2010, Homeboyz were promoted to the top flight in 2013 and have had become a mainstay since, coming close to winning the title in the 2021-22 season when they finished level on points with winners Tusker only to miss out on goal difference.

They got their revenge last season when they beat Tusker in the final of the FKF Cup to win their first trophy which earned them qualification to the CAF Confederation Cup, although their journey ended at the preliminary round.

Shimanyula and his charges are plotting even bigger things this season as he believes his team are capable of winning the league even if they are eight points behind leaders Posta Rangers after nine matches.

“We will win this league, we normally start the first leg slow but pick up in the second leg,” said a confident Shimanyula.

“If we finish the first leg in the top four, then definitely we will win this league. I have no doubt about my team.”

Homeboyz, who have failed to win their last two games, are 10th on the table with 12 points ahead of Sunday’s meeting against Muhoroni Youth.
