Kawooya joined KCCA in a hotly contested transfer from Vipers SC in 2020, but played only four games in two seasons at Lugogo, scoring one goal, before he was shipped out to UPDF in 2022.

The latest installment of the Kampala derby between age-old rivals KCCA FC and Express presents a narrative of rivalry and reunion.

Seven-time league champions Express make the short trip across town on Sunday afternoon to visit the Kasasiro Boys – 13-time winners themselves – at the MTN Omondi Stadium.

Away from the rivalry which will play-out another chapter, the attention will be on the returning former KCCA players, particularly Andrew Kawooya and Emmanuel Wasswa.

Kawooya, affectionately known as 'Sergeant' among the football fraternity, this match represents more than just a derby. It appears to be a chapter of unfinished business.

Kawooya joined KCCA in a hotly contested transfer from Vipers SC in 2020, but played only four games in two seasons at Lugogo, scoring one goal, before he was shipped out to UPDF in 2022.

A shining beacon during his time with the youth side, marked by victories at tournaments like the Cambiasso and Rainbow U-20 in Tanzania, Kawooya parted ways with the Kasasiro boys earlier this year on mutual terms after the termination of his contract.

Now at Express, the former boy wonder is yet to leave up to expectation, but he is brimming with optimism that he can add a dent in his former side’s troubled start to the season.

"I first thank God, who has enabled us to clinch four points in our first two games,” he told Extreme Sports.

“Tomorrow, going into our encounter against KCCA, Kampala derby, we expect positive results.”

“Our coaches have availed us with training that enables us to pick all the maximum three points, shooting, finishing, and defending," he added.

While Express FC enters the arena with an unbeaten streak, drawing once and notably defeating Busoga United in their recent league match, KCCA is grappling with their form.

The team, currently ensnared in a state of turmoil, has yet to taste victory after two games, suffering defeats to both Bul FC and Maroons.
