The Harambee Stars midfielder's current contract with the Law Enforcers is set to expire at the end of July.
Kenya Police interim coach Salim Babu has disclosed that the club is actively negotiating a new contract with Kenyan international Kenneth Muguna.
Muguna’s current contract is set to expire at the end of July, prompting a race among several teams eager to secure his signature.
Police, who are aiming to secure a ticket to next season’s CAF Confederation Cup by lifting the FKF Cup at the end of the month, are keen on retaining the vastly experienced former Gor Mahia midfielder.
“He is a Kenya Police player, and we really need him. He is in our plans, and we need to have him on board next season,” Babu told the media after their 0-0 draw against Bandari FC.
“Talks between the team and himself are ongoing to see if he can extend his contract with us,” stated Babu.
Muguna was part of the Gor Mahia side that reached the quarter finals of the CAF Confederation Cup in 2019, and his experience could go a long way in helping them navigate that competition should they qualify for it.
Meanwhile, Babu gave his thoughts on the reason why his side could not get a win against a hapless Bandari FC, who have won just once since April.
“We had planned to win. We created many chances in the first half that we didn't convert. It has been a game of chances, and I believe we would have won had we converted ours. We have got a draw, but that wasn't our plan,” Babu remarked, reflecting on the missed opportunities that cost them the win.
In a strategic move, the former Nzoia United head coach opted to rotate his squad, providing playing time to a broader range of players.
Key figures such as Abud Omar, Musa Mohammed, and Muguna started from the bench, a decision Babu justified by emphasising the depth of talent within the team.
“Police have so many gifted players. We can make two teams that can play in the league and perform well, so there is always no pressure in making changes,” Babu explained.
“ In this game, I thought it wise to allow some of the players who have not had much playing time recently."
Despite their efforts, Police will conclude the season in third place after Tusker consolidated their place as the runners up by by defeating Posta Rangers and accumulating 62 points.
Police secured third position with six points more than fourth-placed Nairobi City Stars.
As the season wraps up, all eyes are on the ongoing contract discussions with Muguna, a player whose future could significantly influence Kenya Police FC's ambitions for the next season.
