Sports CS Kipchumba Murkomen has put together a team to steer Kenya’s preparations for CHAN 2024 and AFCON 2027 amid concerns over the country’s readiness.
Sports Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has appointed a 36-member multi-agency team to oversee the organisation and execution of the 2024 African Nations Championships (CHAN) and 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON 2027).
Kenya will co-host the two tournaments alongside Uganda and Tanzania but the country has been left behind by its neighbours when it comes to readiness of stadiums and as well ups putting together an organising committee.
Murkomen has now put in place the team tasked with ensuring Kenyan does not miss out on the two tournaments with CHAN 2024 the main priority given it will kick off on February 1, 2025.

58 days to CHAN: Can Kenya beat the clock or face another national embarrassment?
Kenya faces a tight 28-day deadline to finalize CHAN 2024 preparations amid mounting challenges and CAF inspectors' concerns.
The team is headed by former CECAFA secretary general Nicholas Musonye, deputised by the Football Kenya Federation president, while the secretariat is led by Homeboyz boss Mike Rabar, whose deputy is FKF CEO Patrick Korir.
“Now therefore, the Cabinet Secretary for Ministry of Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports, in exercise of the powers conferred on me by the Executive Order No. 2 of 2023 and the Sports Act, 2013 do establish the Pamoja CHAN 2024 and Pamoja AFCON 2027 multi-agency team (CHAN-AFCON MAT),” Murkomen said in a Gazette notice dated December 6.
“In the execution of its mandate, the MAT shall adopt its own procedure and set down guiding principles and norms to govern its operations.”
The team’s oversight council will include Murkomen, his Principal Secretary Peter Tum, Defence PS Patrick Mariru, Treasury PS Chris Kiptoo and his Transport counterpart Mohamed Daghar.
The multi-agency team will also have the solicitor general, Principal Secretaries Raymond Omollo (Interior), Mary Muthoni (Health), John Tanui (ICT), John Ololtuaa (Tourism), Korir Sing’oei (Foreign Affairs), Julius Bitok (Immigration), Principal Secretary, Abubakar Hassan (Investments Promotion), Principal Secretary, Abdi Fidhow (East African Community) and Nairobi County Secretary Godfrey Akumali.
Kenya is in a race against time to have the necessary infrastructure ready on time with inspectors from Confederation of African Football (CAF) not impressed by the progress in the country so far.
Kasarani Stadium, which is earmarked for the CHAN tournament, is far from ready and the country has until December 31 to deliver it or risk losing the hosting rights to Rwanda.
Those are some of the issues the newly-formed multi-agency team will have to address as the clock ticks towards deadline.
