The country prepares to host the CECAFA General Assembly, focusing on regional football development and key administrative decisions.

Mombasa has been announced as the host city for the upcoming non-elective General Assembly of the Council of East and Central Africa Football Associations (CECAFA).

This crucial event is scheduled for Friday 16 February, as confirmed by Auka Gecheo, the CECAFA Executive Director.

In a statement released on Tuesday, Gecheo informed all 12 Member Associations about the development, marking a vital step in the regional football calendar.

"Among other things, the Assembly will receive, discuss, and ratify the CECAFA competitions and the calendar for 2024/2025," Gecheo highlighted.

The Assembly is set to be a comprehensive affair, with members also slated to receive and scrutinize the CECAFA financial report for the year 2023.

The year 2024 looks promising for football in the region, with several key competitions on the horizon.

These include the AFCON U-17 and AFCON U-20 Zonal qualifiers, the Zonal CAF Women’s Champions League qualifiers, the CECAFA Senior Women Championship, and the Pan African Schools Football Championship Zonal qualifiers, among others.

The Assembly in Mombasa will be pivotal in laying the groundwork for these events.

The last CECAFA General Assembly, held in Zanzibar on January 6, 2023, saw significant outcomes, including the re-election of Tanzania’s Wallace Karia as the President.

The executive committee saw the inclusion of notable figures such as Ethiopia’s Isayas Jira Bosho as Vice President, Gen. Augustino Parek Maduot (South Sudan), Burundi’s Alexandre Muyenge, and Doris Petra of the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) as the Women's representative.

Olivier Mugabo Nizeyimana, President of the Rwanda Football Federation (FERWAFA), also serves as an Executive Committee Member.

The CECAFA, comprising 12 member nations - Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, Ethiopia, Somalia, Djibouti, Eritrea, Sudan, South Sudan, and Zanzibar - represents a significant portion of the African football landscape.
