Shock was evident as Raila Odinga congratulated Harambee Stars for holding Ivory Coast to a goalless draw in World Cup qualifier.

Former Kenya Prime Minister Raila Odinga has congratulated Harambee Stars after holding Ivory Coast to a goalless draw in their 2026 World Cup qualifier at the Bingu Stadium in Lilongwe, Malawi, on Tuesday.

This outcome represents a notable accomplishment for the Stars, as they are the first team to halt the Elephants' momentum, who were on a three-game winning streak in Group F.

Raila expressed his pride in the team’s performance through a heartfelt message on his social media pages.

"Our Harambee Stars displayed amazing passion and tenacity in Malawi, securing a well-deserved 0-0 draw against African Champions Ivory Coast. Proud of the team's spirit and tenacity," Raila stated.

Kenya currently sits in position 107 in the men's FIFA World ranking whereas Ivory Coast is placed in position 38.

Despite the ranking disparity, Kenya had golden opportunities to seize the lead, notably when captain Michael Olunga squandered a brilliant chance following a swift counterattack.

The Elephants also had their moments, with substitute Fofana Seko nearly securing victory for Ivory Coast, only to see his effort cannon off the woodwork.

The draw ended Ivory Coast’s winning streak in Group F and highlighted the resilience of the Kenyan team.

Earlier, Kenya played to a 1-1 draw against Burundi on Friday, with Duke Abuya netting the opener in the 72nd minute before Abdallah Sudi equalized for Burundi in the 85th.

These results leave Kenya third in the group with five points, behind Gabon who have six, and leaders Ivory Coast with 10 points.

Raila’s congratulatory message has resonated with many Kenyans, inspiring confidence and national pride.

The Harambee Stars' spirited performance against one of Africa's top teams underscores their potential and determination to succeed in the qualifiers.

With two crucial points earned from their recent matches, Kenya's journey in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers continues to gather momentum.

The Stars' next challenge will be to convert these strong performances into victories, as they aim to climb up the group standings and secure a spot in the World Cup.
