The defender will be the first Kenyan to play in the Portuguese top flight in recent years.

Former Mathare United center back Johnstone Omurwa is set to become the first Kenyan to play in the Portuguese top flight in recent years after penning a new deal at CF Estrela.

Omurwa was snapped up by the club back in July and played some part in their promotion from the Segunda Liga (Second League) to top flight for the first time in their 12-year history.

The 24-year-old defender has penned a new one year contract, similar to the one he inked when he joined the club and will hope to feature more regularly for the club next season.

Omurwa featured nine times for the Portuguese club last season, making seven appearances in the league and two in the Allianz Cup.

The lanky defender will hope to commence his season with a bang after a nightmare end to the last campaign where he was handed his marching orders against Penafiel.

Omurwa has featured 11 times for Harambee Stars since making his debut back in September 2019 against Uganda and has also turned out for Wazito FC at club level.

His two stints at Wazito was sandwiched by a move to Mathare United with his last club being the former before sealing a move to the Portuguese side.

Before joining Esterla he had unsuccessful trials at Israeli club Sektzia Ness Ziona FC where he was rumoured to be close to signing a deal.
