Omondi is quickly establishing himself as Gor Mahia’s first choice goalkeeper since signing for the club in the off season despite only playing 13 league games for Sofapaka last season.
Gor Mahia custodian Kevin Omondi has revealed how life at his new club has been since joining from Sofapaka during the off season in July.
Omondi is quickly establishing himself as the club’s first choice goalkeeper, which has put him in a good position to keep earning plaudits and make a name for himself after taking a while to get to that level.
The custodian, who also played for Wazito and Sony Sugar, has revealed that it was initially challenging to adapt to the culture of the new team, admitting he was in awe of the high standards that have been set at the Green Army which he believes is what has made the club stand out from the rest.
“It has been challenging considering I have had to adapt to the culture of the team because of the training and team considering you get new coaches and team,” Omondi told Sports Eye.
“The training is also different but so far, I am going on well.”
Omondi has also revealed how he was convinced to join the club by Boniface Oluoch, the current goalkeeper trainer, and former custodian of the club.
“I was expecting to get a lot of fans that I found, and the way the team is run. It is run more professionally than other teams and it has a lot of high expectations which means that the things have to run smoothly so that they can achieve their goals.”
“Boniface Oluoch, our goalkeeper trainer. He told me that he would like to work with me and since we have known each other for a while even when he was a player, he called me and asked me to join if my contract at Sofapaka ends.”
In the four matches he has started for Gor Mahia, Omondi has displayed exceptional shot-stopping abilities and a keen sense of positioning. His arrival has seen him claim the starting position, relegating Caleb Otieno to the bench.
While Otieno started in the first match of the season, his relative inexperience at this level has led to Omondi taking the reins as the primary goalkeeper.
Gad Mathews, the most experienced goalkeeper in the squad, now has a big job of reclaiming his spot having returned to action in Saturday's friendly match after an injury.
