Konate's escape: Slot’s biased verdict on Liverpool defender avoiding second yellow

Arne Slot gave a mixed review of Ibrahima Konate’s first-half challenges that caused controversy against Wolves.

Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konate escaped a red card in Sunday's 2-1 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers

First-half goals from Luis Diaz and Mohamed Salah meant the Reds beat Wolves despite Matheus Cunha halving the deficit after halftime and the hosts failing to have a single attempt in the second half as the away side pressed for an equaliser.

Although the result took Liverpool seven points clear of Arsenal, who beat Leicester the day before, the controversial point was Konate avoiding a dismissal.

What happened?

The French defender was shown a yellow card in the first half for a foul on Cunha before kicking the ball away.

He then made another late challenge on Cunha on the edge of the penalty area but was not shown a second yellow card by referee Simon Hooper.

What Slot said about Konate escaping red

Liverpool boss Arne Slot substituted Konate at half-time, admitting that he was concerned about the defender being sent off for another foul.

The Dutchman felt that Konate's first yellow card was harsh and that he was fortunate to avoid a second yellow for the challenge on Cunha.

"Yes, I took him off because of that,” Slot admitted after the match.

"I saw him getting his first yellow, that was for me a soft yellow. If he would have gotten a second one for a shoulder push, that would again be a soft yellow. So then he would have been sent off by two soft yellows. I think the referee felt the same, that's why he didn't [send him off].

"But I've watched football so many times in my life and I know that a player and a referee is then under pressure. So every next foul will lead again to maybe a referee that thinks, maybe I should give him.

"For him it was so difficult to play 45 minutes off the ball against a strong Wolves team. So I had to take him off because you can't play football knowing in your head you can make a foul against such good players."

Wolves boss Vitor Pereira was unhappy with the decision not to send Konate off, feeling that the defender should have been shown a second yellow card for the challenge on Cunha.

What next for Liverpool?

Liverpool are away at Aston Villa on Wednesday before travelling to Manchester City on Sunday, February 23.
