Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) chairman Alexander Sasha Mutai has revealed the union is planning on hosting an event next month with an aim of inviting prospective companies to come and see its plan that will help achieve more financial sustainability.
Speaking during the announcement of the union’s sponsorship deal with SportPesa that will see the upcoming National Sevens Circuit given a Ksh15 million boost by the gaming company, Mutai said that the event scheduled for Friday, July 28 will aim at attracting more partners to help relieve its financial burden.

KRU have announced a partnership deal that will see the 2023 national circuit named the SportPesa Sevens Circuit.
“We will have an event where we'll invite potential partners to showcase our brand and the talent that we have.” Mutai Said.
The chairman further revealed that the union aims to make rugby a money-making business in order to help it become financially self-sufficient.

“At the event, we shall invite our potential partnerships to show them where the money is going and what our plan is. We are excited about the journey that we will be taking.”

SportPesa stopped sponsoring the union in 2020 after taxation rules by the previous government regime effectively meant it was impossible to sponsor any sport.
In 2022 the gaming firm resumed its partnership with the union, agreeing to sign a deal that would see Shujaa sponsored. It has now widened its sponsorship to the Sevens Circuit.

Sasha Mutai has explained why the former players’ input will be important in light of Kenya Sevens’ relegation from the World Series as he woos more sponsors.
Quizzed about whether Kenya Cup would manage to get sponsorship, Mutai said: “It has been a while since the Kenya Cup has had sponsorship and I want to thank all our clubs for their perseverance. The sponsorships will come in and we want to ensure that we are accountable because this money will be used to strengthen these clubs.”
