Cristiano Ronaldo picks Mbappe over Benzema, snubs ex-Real Madrid teammates for Man Utd legend
Portugal and Al Nassr superstar Cristiano Ronaldo has picked Kylian Mbappe as his top player including several other surprising choices in a player challenge with Rio Ferdinand.
Mbappe's struggles
The 25-year-old completed his dream move to Real Madrid this summer. Although he scored in the Super Cup triumph, he needed four LALIGA games to finally get on the scoresheet in the Spanish top flight.
More worrying, however, is his form for the French national team. The former PSG ace led Didier Deschamps’s side to Euro 2024 in Germany—his first tournament as captain—and only managed one goal, a penalty against Poland in the group stage.
The underwhelming showing for France has seemingly stretched past that tournament, as he failed to be impactful a few days ago in the 3-1 defeat to Italy.
What Lizarazu said
His performance level has attracted criticism, and Lizarazu, who was a member of the French squad that won the World Cup and Euros, had the following to say.
"You can't be insensitive to the feelings of the French team's supporters, to the frustrations they may have, to the questions they may have,” he said in his column for L’Equipe.
“You have to try to answer them, give them hope; it's part of the job and the emotional connection you have to have with your fans.
"Perhaps he is less serene than usual, more tense because he is slow to find the best footballing version of himself. Mbappe is no longer as explosive or decisive as he was. He remains a very good scorer, a very good player of course, but he is no longer scary as before."
