After claiming Chelsea's scalp at the weekend, Newcastle came close to another famous win but were denied by a controversial penalty in additional time against Paris Saint-Germain
Paris Saint-Germain had to rely on a controversial extra-time penalty to rescue a draw against Newcastle in the UEFA Champions League.
After conquering Chelsea over the weekend, Newcastle were determined to create another upset as they led the home side for most of the game before succumbing to a late penalty, which will certainly be the main talking point in the post-match discussions.
Newcastle took the lead through Alexander Isak and were moments away from completing the double over PSG before Kylian Mbappe dispatched a late spot kick.
How it happened
PSG were warned of things to come early in the game when Isak had a superb opportunity to put the visitors in front but blazed his attempt over the bar.
The hosts were stung midway through the first half when Isak made it two goals in two games to give Newcastle the lead at the Parc des Princes with a neat finish after Gianluigi Donnarumma failed to gather Miguel Amlmiron’s initial attempt.
The home side piled pressure on their English visitors in search of an equaliser, but
PSG were certain that they had earned a way back into the match after an apparent handball by Newcastle youngster Lewis Miley, but the hosts were stunned to find that referee Szymon Marciniak did not call for a penalty, and neither did the VAR officials.
The Ligue 1 champions would get some restitution, and what they would feel is justice as they were awarded a controversial 97th-minute penalty, which captain-on-the-night, Mbappe scored to snatch a point from the jaws of defeat.
