Nigerian forwards Victor Boniface and Nathan Tella are German Super Cup champions with Bayer Leverkusen.

Nigerian forwards Victor Boniface and Nathan Tella were at the heart of the action as Bayer Leverkusen clinched the German Super Cup in a dramatic penalty shootout against Stuttgart.

Despite being reduced to 10 men, Leverkusen showed their remarkable resilience, with Patrik Schick coming off the bench to salvage a 2-2 draw and take the game to spot-kicks.

And it was the Nigerians who played a starring role, with 23-year-old Boniface opening the scoring in the 11th minute before an unexpected early exit.

Leverkusen's impressive 43-match unbeaten home run was put to the test, and Boniface wasted no time in making an impact, tapping in the opener after a knockdown from Edmond Tapsoba.

But the joy was short-lived as Stuttgart's Enzo Millot equalised just four minutes later, bringing the scores level at 1-1.

Disaster then struck for the Bundesliga champions when Martin Terrier saw red for a reckless challenge, leaving Leverkusen with 10 men.

Bayer Leverkusen make it three titles in three finals.

In a surprising move, manager Xabi Alonso decided to sacrifice Boniface, substituting the Nigerian forward after just 41 minutes, with Jonathan Tah taking his place.

The early substitution, despite Boniface's goal, highlighted the tactical challenges faced by Alonso as Leverkusen fought to maintain their unbeaten home record.

But as was the case last season, Bayer came back with a late strike from Patrik Schick to force a penalty shootout, where they eventually triumphed to clinch the German Super Cup.

With the victory on Saturday night, Bayer Leverkusen not only extended their unbeaten run to 44 matches across German competitions but added the Super Cup to their historic Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal wins.
