Messi's injury
Pulse Sports reported that the 37-year-old suffered an ankle sprain in the final of the Copa America. The leg was visibly swollen as he sat on the bench crying, and after further tests, it was confirmed that he would be out of action for more than a month.
He was nearing a return to action as a clip hit the internet showing Messi back in training with the rest of the Inter Miami squad after being sidelined for several weeks, signalling an improvement in his condition.
He was expected to return to match action sometime in September and to have returned to top form before the MLS playoffs in October; however, that timeline now seems too soon.
Possible injury setback
The Miami Herald reported today that Messi was absent from group training with the rest of the squad. However, his bodyguard, Yassine Chueko, was present on the grounds, suggesting the former Barcelona man was around and possibly training alone.
This indicates that he has suffered a setback, as he had previously advanced to the group training stage in his rehabilitation. Messi has missed 20 of the 35 games the Herons have played so far this season and is set to miss more, with the clash against Philadelphia Union scheduled for this weekend.
