The Argentine superstar was in action as Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) suffered a loss to Olympique Marseille.
Lionel Messi’s wait for Coupe de France title continued on Wednesday night after PSG suffered a 2-1 defeat in their round of 16 match against Olympique Marseille.
Le Classique took the centre stage at Velodrome Arena as Marseille welcomed PSG in Coupe de France.
Messi was in the PSG squad after missing the 7-0 victory over Pays de Cassel last time out in the competition.
Messi's Coup de France journey ends
The 35-year-old was looking to win the competition having missed out on it last season. Messi has won all competitions he has played in except for Coupe de France.
Messi played just one match in the competition last season, which was also in the round of 16. However, PSG suffered a 5-6 penalty shootout defeat to OGC Nice, ending Messi’s chance of winning the competition last season.
He was hoping of winning it this season, but his journey ended in the same stage as last season.
Marseille were fired up for the encounter, having suffered a disappointing home defeat in their Ligue 1 match over the weekend.
Igor Tudor’s men started the game on the front foot, but they had to wait until the 31st minute before taking the lead.
The home side took the lead through Alexis Sanchez’s penalty after Sergio Ramos upended Cengiz Under in the box.
Ramos did redeem himself as he headed PSG level on the stroke of halftime.
Malinovsky sends out second-best PSG
The second half resumed with Marseille being the better team, and they got a reward for their performance, retaking the lead through a stunner from Ruslan Malinovsky.
Malinovsky’s stunner proved to be the winner despite Messi and his teammates’ attempt to salvage an equaliser.
It is a big blow for PSG, who were second best in almost all departments. The French champions fired just three shots on target compared to Marseille’s 8, while they also had half of Marseille’s 16 shots in the whole game.
