Lionel Messi was honoured with America's highest civilian honor, despite not being a citizen of the country.
Lionel Messi has made the headlines after being awarded the prestigious Presidential Medal of Freedom by the U.S. President Joe Biden.
This honour, America’s highest civilian accolade, is reserved for individuals who have made unparalleled contributions to society, embodying the nation's values and ideals.
However, Messi’s achievement marks a significant crossover of global sport into American culture, highlighting the 37-year-old’s impact both on and off the pitch.
The awards ceremony will take place on 4th July at the White House, a fitting celebration of Messi’s impact on sport and humanity.
Since moving to the U.S. in 2023 to join Inter Miami—a Major League Soccer team part-owned by David Beckham— the Argentine football legend, has elevated the profile of the league and inspired countless fans.
Despite playing just 39 games for the Florida-based club, the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner brought them their first-ever trophy, the Leagues Cup, in his debut season.
Why Messi was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom
President Biden praised Messi not only for his extraordinary athletic achievements but also for his extensive charity work.
Through the Leo Messi Foundation, the footballer has championed healthcare and education initiatives for disadvantaged children worldwide.
As a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, he has further amplified his influence, showcasing how global stars can give back meaningfully.
The White House statement emphasised the significance of the honorees, saying as per Daily Mail:
“These nineteen Americans are great leaders who have made America a better place. They are good people who have made extraordinary contributions to their country and the world.”
Messi joins an elite group of athletes, including NBA legend and billionaire Magic Johnson in the honourees this year, as well as golf legend Tiger Woods, American women’s football legend Megan Rapinoe and Olympic heroes Simone Biles and Katie Ledecky, who have previously received this honour.
With a glittering career boasting eight Ballon d’Or titles, a World Cup win, and four Champions League trophies, Messi’s influence transcends football, cementing his legacy as a global ambassador of goodwill and excellence.
