With the right-back entering the final six months of his contract, the speculation surrounding his future has intensified, particularly after his lacklustre performance in Liverpool's 2-2 draw with Manchester United.
Carragher questions timing of Real Madrid bid
Jamie Carragher suggested that Alexander-Arnold's representatives may have anticipated Real Madrid’s bid, implying it wasn’t a surprise for the Liverpool star.
Speaking after the game against Manchester United, the former Liverpool captain said, “They will have known what was happening [surrounding the bid]. I’m not naive enough to think that Real Madrid would have put a bid in January for a player they can get for nothing in four months.”
Carragher expressed disappointment with Alexander-Arnold, who he felt could be a potential future Liverpool captain and should have been focused on securing the club's spot at the pinnacle of English football.
Former United defender Gary Neville echoed Carragher’s sentiments about the bid’s timing, describing it as “insulting” and “a distraction” for the player.
Sturridge and defends Alexander-Arnold amid contract uncertainty
Former Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge defended Alexander-Arnold, insisting the full-back’s professionalism would not allow transfer rumours to affect his game.
“He’s a professional guy,” Sturridge said before adding, “It’s not his personality to not be focused on the game.”
However, he admitted that Alexander-Arnold’s defensive lapses were an issue but cited a lack of support from teammates in certain situations did not help the full-back.
Despite criticism, fans at Anfield made their feelings clear, unfurling a banner in the Kop end featuring Alexander-Arnold and two other soon-to-be out-of-contract stars, Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah, asking for their deals to be renewed.
