Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold fawned over Lionel Messi in a recent interview.

Liverpool midfielder Trent Alexander-Arnold is on the Lionel Messi side of the GOAT debate. In a recent interview, he articulated why the Argentine is the best to have played the game.

What Arnold said

Trent has squared up against the Argentine in the Champions League, and although the Scouser’s Liverpool triumphed in the round, Messi ran their defence ragged in the first leg.

The 37-year-old scored a brace in the first leg of the tie, in which Barcelona won 3-0, and although Liverpool overturned the tie, winning 4-0, Trent still shudders at the frightfulness of turning up against the diminutive footballing mage.

“There's just a different feeling playing against him that I've ever felt with anyone else,” Trent told the Mirror, per ESPN.

“You're always on red alert when the ball is near him. I think it's very rare for a player to kind of put that feeling into other players so, for that reason, I have to say him.

“For me, I think in many, many aspects of the game, he's probably the best at any given moment; he can almost do what he wants on a football pitch so for that reason, he's the best.”

The last three years has seen Messi peel away from his closest competitor in the GOAT debate, Cristiano Ronaldo. He won two Copa America titles and the grandest trophy of all, the World Cup.

The latest Copa America win made him the most decorated footballer in history, with 45 trophies and he was honoured by his club, Inter Miami, in a short but elaborate ceremony.
