The young Italian defender, sidelined for nearly six months, has now been included in Gian Piero Gasperini’s squad for their Serie A clash against Parma, despite earlier fears that he would be out for at least three more months.
Scalvini recovers from devastating injury in record time
The 20-year-old suffered a heartbreaking ACL tear on June 2, 2024, in the dying moments of Atalanta’s 2-2 draw with Fiorentina on the final day of the Serie A season.
The injury seemed to spell disaster for Scalvini’s burgeoning career, ruling him out of EURO 2024 and initially projected to keep him off the pitch until well into 2025.
Yet, just five months and 20 days later, Scalvini has completed an astonishing recovery, making it back into the squad for Atalanta’s Serie A match against Parma.
Scalvini returns to Atalanta squad
Scalvini’s early return is a monumental boost for Atalanta. Despite his youth, the defender is already seen as one of the club’s most important players, with 33 Serie A appearances last season and 32 the year prior.
His composure and defensive awareness have been integral to Atalanta’s system under Gasperini as well as the Italian national team, where he has already amassed 8 caps.
With Nigeria’s Ademola Lookman leading Atalanta’s attack, Scalvini’s return adds balance to the squad, strengthening their defensive backbone as they push for Serie A success.
Fans will be eager to see how quickly the Italy international can reintegrate into the starting lineup to continue his incredible progress at such a young age.
