The ex-Liverpool star was at his brilliant best as he started his career in Brazil on an impressive note.
Former Barcelona star Luis Suarez rolled back the years after he scored a hat-trick on his debut for Gremio in their 4-1 win over Sao Luiz in the Recopa Gaucha on Tuesday night.
Suarez joined the Brazilian club on a free transfer after a short spell with his boyhood club Nacional FC in Uruguay.
Suarez's explosive start
The Uruguayan made his debut for his new club on Tuesday night, and it did not take long to announce himself to Gremio fans. Suarez put Immortal Tricolor ahead four minutes into the game in typical Suarez fashion.
The 35-year-old got on the end of a long ball from the right before lobbing the ball over the opposition goalkeeper. However, Sao Luiz equalised just nine minutes later before Bitello restored Gremio’s lead.
From that moment on, the match turned into Suarez’s show. The former Barcelona star scored his second and Gremio’s third with a cool and calm finish after he was put through on goal with a decisive pass.
It took Suarez just 38 minutes in the opening half to complete his hat trick as he volleyed home from inside the box to finish off a dominant first half for the home side.
Suarez goes off to a standing ovation
The second half was not played at the same tempo as the first, but Suarez still showed a glimpse of his quality. The ex-Ajax man was eventually taken off 14 minutes after the break to a standing ovation from the home crowd.
It is the perfect start for the Uruguayan after a disappointing World Cup campaign, which saw him crying following Uruguay’s exit in the group stage. Suarez will hope to continue his good start when Gremio take on SER Caxias do Sul on Saturday.
