The former Tusker FC has left Mamelodi Sundowns after four seasons and multiple titles amidst a significant team reshuffle by coach Rulani Mokwena.

Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Rulani Mokwena has confirmed the departure of key defender Brian Mandela.

This development follows the recent exits of midfielder Bongani Zungu and Ethiopian forward Abubaker Nassir.

During a revealing interview with PowerFM, facilitated by sports journalist Mmasekepe Matsebane, Mokwena discussed the evolving squad dynamics and the rationale behind the strategic personnel shifts.

According to IDiski, Mandela’s departure, who joined the team in 2019, marks the end of an era that saw the Harambee Stars defender enjoy four successful seasons at Chloorkop.

Under Mokwena’s stewardship, Mandela contributed to the club securing four consecutive DStv Premiership titles, a testament to his impact on the field.

Despite his earlier success, the 29-year-old defender found himself relegated to a lesser role in the 2023/24 season.

With just three starts and nine appearances overall, Mandela’s diminished presence on the pitch was conspicuous and hinted at upcoming changes.

His tenure at Sundowns culminated with over 61 appearances, contributing two goals—a modest tally reflecting his primarily defensive responsibilities.

Mokwena recently found himself in the spotlight, defending Mandela against vocal critics among the fanbase, demonstrating the complexities of football management and the delicate balance between team strategy and player support.

This defense, however, did not translate into increased playing time for Mandela, who seemed to have fallen out of favor in the tactical setups envisioned by Mokwena.

Onyango's reduced role coincided with a period of fluctuation for Sundowns, as they navigated both domestic league challenges and continental commitments in the CAF inter-clubs competitions.

His sporadic appearances this past season underscored a strategic pivot as Mokwena and his coaching staff reassess player contributions and potential alignments for the upcoming campaigns.

The changes at Sundowns are reflective of broader trends in football, where player rotations and transfers are increasingly driven by tactical needs and future planning rather than solely by player performances.

This approach is evident in the proactive management style of Mokwena, who has been instrumental in maintaining Sundowns' competitive edge both domestically and in African football.
