Manchester United suffered a disappointing defeat at the hands of Newcastle on Sunday evening in their Premier League match.

The Red Devils’ rested some of their players for the game after their 2-2 draw in France against Lyon in the first leg of the Europa League quarterfinal.

Ruben Amorim’s depleted side were unable to cope with Newcastle as they suffered a 4-1 thrashing at St James Park.

As it happened

Newcastle are unchanged from the side that started last Monday's 3-0 win at Leicester City in the Premier League.

Andre Onana was dropped from the squad and did not feature, with Altay Bayindir starting in his place.

Newcastle got on the front foot, scoring the opening goal from Sandro Tonali's crisp volley in the 24th minute.

However, Manchester United scored the equaliser just before halftime from Alejandro Garnacho’s effort.

The second half was a different ball game as Newcastle trooped out to cause havoc in United’s defence.

Two quick goals from Harvey Barnes and another from Bruno Guimarães gave the host a three-goal cushion, leaving Ruben Amorim’s team disorganised.

Newcastle dominated until the final whistle and earned an important three points in their bid to make the Champions League next season.
