Championship side Plymouth Argyle have sacked Wayne Rooney after a woeful run of form.

Plymouth Argyle have parted ways with Wayne Rooney, just months after his appointment.

The Manchester United and England legend took the reins at the Championship side at the beginning of the season, but a horrendous run of form has seen the Pilgrims slump to the bottom of the table.

With just four wins in 23 games, Plymouth are now consigned to a relegation battle.

Their recent 9-game winless streak includes a 4-0 drubbing by Sheffield Wednesday and Bristol City.

The final straw came with a 2-0 loss to relegation rivals Oxford United, prompting the club to announce Rooney's departure in a statement.

"We can confirm that the club and head coach Wayne Rooney have mutually agreed to part ways with immediate effect," the statement read.

Rooney's assistant Mike Phelan and first team coach Simon Ireland will also be leaving the club.

First team coach Kevin Nancekivell and club captain Joe Edwards will take charge of the team for their upcoming match against Bristol City on New Year's Day.

Plymouth Argyle's statement continued:

"We would like to thank Wayne and his team for all their efforts and wish them well for the future. The club will be making no further comment at this stage with updates on our new first team management staff in due course."
