McCarthy, who left his coaching role at United in 2024, disclosed that Kane, along with Randal Kolo Muani and Victor Osimhen, were all being pursued by the club before they ultimately decided to sign Rasmus Hojlund from Atalanta.

What McCarthy said

McCarthy believes that United's failure to sign Kane has proven costly, with the England striker going on to join Bayern Munich and scoring an impressive 73 goals in 75 appearances.

Harry Kane celebrates another goal for Bayern Munich—proof that Manchester United may have made a costly mistake by passing on him.

"In the summer of 2023, Harry Kane was our No. 1 target," McCarthy exclusively told Ladbrokes.

He continued: "Kane was the prime target, but obviously, the price tag was an issue. Because he would have been leaving Spurs for United, a few extra million pounds were added on to the price tag."

"If you look at it now, you'd say that it would have been well worth it because he's gone to Bayern and he's still producing, he's still scoring.

Meanwhile, Osimhen joined Galatasaray on loan and has netted 19 times in 24 outings, while Kolo Muani made a swift impact at Juventus after joining from PSG in January.

McCarthy feels that United's decision to prioritize Hojlund over Kane has not paid off, with the Danish striker managing just two league goals this season.

"For £100million, if you look at it now, you'd say that it would have been well worth it... Erik really wanted him [Kane]. Kolo Muani was also very high on that list. Victor Osimhen was also on that list.

"But I felt that if you're going to want to spend that kind of money - £100million plus - then you want a complete package. Harry Kane, for me, was the complete package," McCarthy revealed.

Meanwhile, since Rasmus Hojlund's arrival at Manchester United, Harry Kane has made a sensational impact at Bayern Munich.
