INEOS have taken cost-cutting at Manchester United to a whole new level

Manchester United’s young stars Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo have earned nominations for the prestigious Kopa Trophy at this year’s Ballon d’Or.

However, the Red Devils have encountered a travel snag in their efforts to get the pair to Paris where the ceremony is being held.

Manchester United make unusual request to biggest rivals

According to reports, Manchester United reached out to cross-town rivals Manchester City to see if Garnacho and Mainoo could secure spots on City’s private jet, which will already be carrying several of City’s Ballon d’Or nominees.

Unfortunately, Manchester United’s noisy neighbours reportedly declined the request, citing a lack of available space.

The snub has left United scrambling to arrange alternative travel plans for their young talents while City’s star-studded contingent heads to the ceremony with nominees for both the men’s and women’s awards.

Manchester United’s request to hitch a ride with their rivals is reportedly part of a broader cost-saving initiative introduced by INEOS, the club’s new minority owner, which has already seen the club sack legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson from his ambassadorial role.

City’s star-studded lineup en route to Ballon d’Or

Manchester City’s delegation for the Ballon d’Or is substantial this year. Among the eight players reportedly jetting off to Paris, midfield stalwart Rodri, Golden Boot winner Erling Haaland, and PFA Player of the year, Phil Foden are all in contention for major awards.

Meanwhile, City’s women’s team stars Yui Hasegawa, Lauren Hemp, and Khadija Shaw will be representing the club on the women’s Ballon d’Or side.

The Cityzens’ young winger Savinho also joins Garnacho and Mainoo in the Kopa Trophy race, hoping to beat Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal to the title.

With City’s private jet reportedly at full capacity, Manchester United’s request was declined, meaning Garnacho and Mainoo will need to make alternative arrangements to ensure they arrive in style for their Kopa Trophy nomination ceremony.

Despite the setback, Garnacho remains in high spirits ahead of United’s Premier League match against West Ham, where he’s expected to feature, while Mainoo, however, has been sidelined due to an ongoing hamstring injury.
