Manchester United gifted Tottenham a point at the Tottenham Hotspurs Stadium after blowing a two again lead against Tottenham under caretaker Ryan Mason
Manchester United blew a two-goal lead against Tottenham to succumb to a 2-2 draw at the Tottenham Hotspurs Stadium in the Premier League.
The Red Devils looked to be on course for a routine victory over Tottenham who are in hapless form at the moment, but their first-half goals from Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford were cancelled out by two Spurs goals from winter signing Pedro Porro and Son Heung-Min.
The two teams are locked in a battle for UEFA Champions League football next season and manager Erik Ten Hag will be incredibly disappointed that his team have allowed Tottenham a lifeline in that race instead of ending their contention with a victory.
His opposite number, 31-year-old Ryan Mason, who is only holding the door open for the next Tottenham boss, will be proud of his team’s achievements in his first match in his second spell as Spurs’ interim boss.
How it happened
Manchester United scored at the start and end of the first half against Tottenham as they dominated the opening proceedings to go into the break with a two goal lead.
Jadon Sancho continued his redemption arc with a goal after only seven minutes, assisted by 2022/23 sensation Marcus Rashford.
Rashford went from provider to scorer when he netted his 28th goal of the campaign in all competitions with a coolly taken finish from a lightning quik Manchester United counter attack to make it 2-0 after 44 minutes.
The first was entirely for Manchester United, and they might have scored more goals on another day with better finishing.
Today, however, they failed to do this, and Totteham made them pay the price for their profligacy with a spirited second-half comeback.
They hit twice as many shots in the second half (12) as they did in the first (6), while creating three big chances as well. They were rewarded with two important goals for their season.
Spurs came into the second half with a lot more purpose than the first, and soon pulled a goal back when winter signing Pedro Porro hit an incredible shot into the top corner from the edge of the area.
Manchester United almost regained their two-goal lead one minute after Tottenham’s equaliser, but Bruno Fernandes was denied by the crossbar following an unorthodox attempt.
With the game drawing to a close, Tottenham found an equaliser through a very familiar combination as Harry Kane set Son Heung-Min up to draw Spurs level at 2-2 with 10 minutes left to play.
Neither side could find the winner in the closing stages and they both had to settle for a draw, although the visitors will believe they should have wrapped up the tie as early as the first half.
The draw leaves Tottenham with a chance, however slim, of making the Champions League, and they will be hoping for more dropped points from the Mancunians to pull off a shock qualification.
