Manchester United's Harry Maguire could get an extended run in the team following an injury to Argentine defender Lisandro Martinez

Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez is set to undergo a second surgery on his foot, which could rule him out for up to two months.

Martinez set for surgery

Martinez suffered an injury to his metatarsal, which was first injured last season and caused him to miss nine Premier League fixtures.

The Argentine defender was injured in training, aggravating a fracture of his metatarsal, which will now require him to undergo surgery in the coming days.

The former Ajax defender could now miss between two and three months of action, leaving the Red Devils’ back line thin, with Raphael Varane only returning from injury while Luke Shaw remains on the sidelines.

Manchester United set to lose another defender

Martinez had played all six of Manchester United’s opening fixtures of the season across the Premier League and UEFA Champions League before getting injured and has already missed three matches while the Red Devils figured out the extent of his foot injury.

Following confirmation of a metatarsal injury, the 25-year-old centre-back will now undergo surgery in the coming days, allowing him to start rehabilitation immediately.

Without Martinez, Manchester United’s options at centre-back include the returning Varane, Victor Lindelof, former captain Harry Maguire, and short-term signing Jonny Evans.
