After being omitted from the Manchester United list of players to be kept, David de Gea's future at the club is now in even greater doubt.

The Spanish goalkeeper was excluded from the list after the negotiation of a new contract with United hit a brick wall.

The list, which was made public on Friday comprises players who are currently under contract at Old Trafford as well as those who are being offered new contracts.

Sources stated that United are no longer as confident that De Gea will sign a new contract because of his omission, which means that talks to replace his current £375,000-per-week deal are not as far along as originally believed.

The 32-year-old contract expires on June 30. At that time, he will be free to leave Old Trafford and conclude his 12-year stay with United.

Despite the pay cut and a warning that he would no longer be guaranteed the No. 1 place, it was anticipated that the former Atletico Madrid goalkeeper would agree to terms after protracted discussions.

A short club statement read as reported by Daily Mail, “Discussions remain open with David over a potential new contract.”

Even though De Gea finished the season with the Premier League's Golden Glove trophy, he received criticism for a number of high-profile slip-ups and his skill with the ball in his hands.

If a deal is not agreed upon before June 30, David De Gea will leave Manchester United on a free transfer.

Greenwood included in Man United retained list

Manchester United’s youngster Mason Greenwood has been included in the retained list being released by the club.

It was believed that Greenwood's inclusion reflected the fact that the 21-year-old striker has a contract at Old Trafford through 2025.

He was previously charged with attempted rape and violence, but those charges were withdrawn in February by the Crown Prosecution Services. As a result, he is still the subject of an internal club investigation.

Greenwood's future at United is still up in the air, although Mail Sport reported last week that one option being considered is loaning him out to a foreign club for the upcoming campaign.
