The Red Devils are one point above Liverpool, who are fifth, as the Hammers go seven points above the relegation zone.

Manchester United could not manage to go third after they were beaten 1-0 by West Ham United at London Stadium on Sunday.

Said Benrahma’s first goal was the difference that separated the two sides in a game that carried a lot of stakes in the Premier League.

Meanwhile, the first chance of the game was created in the 10th minute, but Antony drilled his effort off target. Erik ten Hag was disappointed with the wasted chance, as he thought the ball went in.

Marcus Rashford hit the post in the 18th minute as United got closer to breaking the deadlock again.

However, West Ham took the lead in the 27th minute when Benrahma found the back of the net. The Algerian managed to create a little shooting space while surrounded by both Luke Shaw and Victor Lindelof, and although his effort was weak, David de Gea failed to deal with it as the goalkeeper lost his footing and United went down in the process.

The Red Devils would have equalized in the 32nd minute, but Antony’s effort from close range took a deflection before it hit the post. The away side won a corner but could not get any meaningful result from it.

West Ham’s penalty appeal in the first minute of added time before the break was dismissed. The ball appeared to have hit Lindelof’s arm, but the referee ended the first half without checking the VAR, although the United defender appeared to have moved his arm into the ball.

The Hammers started the second half confidently and pinned the Red Devils in their own area. In the 49th minute, De Gea, who is to blame for gifting West Ham the lead, pulled off a save to keep out a clever strike from Tomas Soucek.

The home side kept fighting, and in the 51st minute they scored, but their goal was ruled out for Michail Antonio’s foul - which rather appeared soft - on De Gea.

Towards the hour mark, United survived a number of attacks from the London club. In the 60th minute, a combination between Lucas Paqueta and Soucek almost brought the second goal for the home side, but the latter’s volley hit the side netting.

United came close to scoring the equalizer in the 78th minute after Bruno Fernandes and Marcel Sabitzer’s interplay. The Portuguese international slipped the ball for the Austrian midfielder, who then dinked the ball to the back post, where Anthony Martial was.

Martial – who was free at the back post – could not get up to head the ball in before it went to Lindelof, who could not pull the trigger before West Ham cleared the danger.

This is the first time that David Moyes has managed to beat the Red Devils – a club he managed when he succeeded Sir Alex Ferguson - since 2012.

United are now a point above Liverpool, although they have a game in hand.
