Fans have called for the symbol of Manchester United's glory to be torn down
Manchester United fans are calling for a fresh start at Old Trafford following a turbulent period that has seen the club part ways with legendary figures like Sir Alex Ferguson and ex-manager Erik ten Hag.
A recent fan survey conducted by the club revealed that a majority support demolishing Old Trafford and building a new stadium, with hopes of a return to glory days and a modernised home for the Red Devils.
Fans demand new stadium to reflect new era
The fan survey, the largest in United’s history, gathered responses from over 50,000 season ticket holders, club members, and executive club members.
It revealed that 52% of fans favour knocking down the iconic Old Trafford to build a new stadium, while 31% prefer a redevelopment of the current structure, with the remaining respondents remaining undecided.
Interestingly, the preference for a new stadium increased with the age of respondents, while younger fans leaned towards preserving the current ground with modifications.
The club’s stadium taskforce, led by Lord Coe, is actively engaging with the fans’ advisory board, fans’ forum, and various focus groups to assess all options.
With co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe reportedly supporting the idea of a new “Wembley of the North,” the decision could shape the next chapter in United’s history.
INEOS’ sweeping changes continue
Talks of taking down the current Old Trafford structure come amidst other recent INEOS decisions fuelling fan unrest, including the club’s move to limit Sir Alex Ferguson’s role at United.
The legendary former manager, who led Manchester United to 13 Premier League titles, was sacked from his ambassadorial role at Old Trafford, where he has reportedly been restricted from entering the first-team dressing room – a privilege he enjoyed for over 27 years.
Manchester United also sacked manager Erik ten Hag after a series of poor results left the club languishing in 14th place.
Ruud van Nistelrooy has stepped in as interim manager, but he too will be replaced by Portuguese gaffer Ruben Amorim as part of the sweeping changes that fans hope will be start of a new era that fans hope will include the upheaval of Old Trafford.
