Less than a year into their stewardship, controversial cost-cutting measures, including increased ticket prices and the abolition of concessions, have led to mass protests and chants similar to their long-standing resentment toward the Glazer family.

Ticket price hike sparks outrage within Manchester United fans

Hundreds of Manchester United fans gathered outside Old Trafford before their game against Everton, voicing their anger at the decision to raise matchday ticket prices to £66 per game.

This controversial move eliminates discounted tickets for children and pensioners, a decision described as a “disgusting low blow” by the Manchester United Supporters’ Trust (MUST).

Protestors, holding banners reading “Stop Exploiting Loyalty," accused Ratcliffe and the Glazers of exploiting fans’ unwavering support. Chants of “Jim Ratcliffe’s a ****” and “Glazers Out” were accompanied by flares, as fans openly displayed their dissatisfaction.

The decision to increase prices affects only three percent of remaining tickets for this season, according to the club.

However, MUST warned that it could set a precedent for even steeper hikes in the future, with a spokesperson saying, “Once they have got used to charging £132 for a parent and child, will they really go back to the old pricing levels for next season?”

A rocky start for INEOS at Manchester United

The backlash is not solely about ticket prices. Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s tenure has seen a series of unpopular decisions, including the dismissal of legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson from his ambassadorial role and cost-cutting measures that have impacted fans with disabilities.

On the pitch, Manchester United’s struggles persist. The sacking of Erik ten Hag and the appointment of Ruben Amorim has done little to turn the club’s fortunes around as they languish just above the bottom half of the Premier League table.

Fans, who had hoped Ratcliffe’s arrival would mark a new era after years of dissatisfaction under the Glazers, are now voicing growing discontent.

While INEOS insists the price hikes and cost-cutting measures are necessary to stabilise the club financially, the ongoing protests suggest they face an uphill battle to win over an already disgruntled fanbase.
