While other top teams enjoyed the start of the new UEFA Champions League format, Manchester United opened their EFL Cup campaign against Barnsley

Manchester United enjoyed a rampant EFL Cup victory over Barnsley, beating the visitors 7-0 thanks to a comfortable display at Old Trafford.

A brace each from Christian Eriksen, Alejandro Garnacho, and Marcus Rashford, in addition to Antony’s opener from the penalty spot helped Manchester United cement a stunning victory to start of their EFL campaign in the perfect way.

The Colliers were no match for their illustrious hosts as they failed to muster any meaningful fightback and were sent crashing out of the EFL Cup.

How it happened

The Red Devils were in control from the start, with Marcus Rashford, Antony, and Alejandro Garnacho each scoring in the first half. Rashford’s opener came on his 200th home appearance for United, while Antony doubled the lead from the penalty spot after being fouled by Barnsley’s goalkeeper.

In the second half, United's dominance continued as Garnacho netted his second of the night, sprinting half the length of the pitch to score. Rashford added his second goal soon after, capitalising on a Barnsley mistake.

Christian Eriksen then added two more goals late in the game, both assisted by Bruno Fernandes, to ensure a dominant scoreline for the Red Devils.

The resounding win marked Erik ten Hag’s biggest triumph as Manchester United manager, and fans of the Red Devils will be hoping that they can carry this performance into their upcoming Premier League clash against Crystal Palace.
