Raphael Varane's departure from Manchester United has opened the door for a new centre-back with the club eyeing potential replacements.

Manchester United are reportedly eyeing Bayern Munich defender Matthijs de Ligt the replacement for the departing Raphael Varane.

The Red Devils have been interested in him for a while, and manager, Erik ten Hag, knows him well from their time together at Ajax. While no official talks have happened yet, De Ligt is a top target for United as they look to strengthen their defense.

De Ligt to Manchester United?

According to the Athletic, De Ligt's contract with Bayern runs until 2027.

However, the transfer fee might be more reasonable than other options like Jarrad Branthwaite, who Everton values at around £70m. United had offered £35m plus add-ons for Branthwaite, but that's still up in the air.

United might end up needing two new central defenders as Victor Lindelof has been linked with a move away.

The 29-year-old has been linked with a move to join former boss Jose Mourinho in Turkey.
