The midfielder could receive a three-match ban for alleged violent conduct, casting a shadow over United’s hard-fought progression to the fourth round.
Ugarte courts controversy at the Emirates
The flashpoint occurred after Arsenal were awarded a contentious penalty when Harry Maguire was deemed to have fouled Kai Havertz with the score tied at 1-1.
Tensions boiled over as Maguire confronted Havertz, sparking a mass brawl involving players from both sides.
Amidst the melee, Ugarte was accused of headbutting Havertz during the altercation, an incident that went unnoticed by referee Andy Madley, who was without the aid of VAR.
With VAR unavailable in the third and fourth rounds of the FA Cup, Ugarte escaped immediate punishment, however, retrospective action could see the Manchester United star hit with a suspension if his actions are deemed violent.
The drama added to the intensity of the match, which ultimately saw Arsenal captain Martin Ødegaard miss the ensuing penalty, allowing United to triumph in the penalty shootout.
Ruben Amorim lauds Manchester United’s fighting spirit
Despite the controversy, United manager Ruben Amorim praised his team’s resilience and fighting spirit, hailing their ability to thrive under pressure.
“Thankfully, the players were there. They fight, and what we talk about before the match is not technical or tactical, but this,” Amorim stated, adding, “Arsenal maybe didn’t deserve to lose, but we deserved the win, with the way we played and the way we fought.”
Amorim also praised the team’s defensive organisation, crediting their unity for the victory, saying, “The spirit was there even with 10 men. The connection between the team on the pitch and the fans outside was a really good thing to feel. I think we are improving on that.”
Manchester United will now turn their focus to their fourth-round clash against Leicester City after overcoming Arsenal in such dramatic fashion, with former striker and interim manager Ruud van Nistelrooy in charge of the Foxes.
