Pulse Sports looks at key players and the statistical advantage the Bavarians have over City.

After a convincing win over Southampton, Manchester City have their full focus on the Champions League match against Bayern Munich on Tuesday at the Etihad Stadium.

Pep Guardiola is still chasing Champions League glory with the Citizens, and Bayern Munich – his former club – is the next hurdle between him and the coveted club trophy.

City came close to winning the European trophy in 2021, but ended up losing 1-0 in the final to Chelsea, who were then coached by Thomas Tuchel, the current Bayern manager.

The Premier League side heads into the first leg clash of the quarter-final after eight consecutive wins. Their current form is impressive, and Guardiola will hope the boys will rise to the occasion against their European rivals at the Etihad.

On the other hand, Bayern – who have not been in superb form – defended the Bundesliga's top spot by beating top-four hopefuls 1-0 in a Super Saturday showdown.

Who are key Bayern Munich players?

Sadio Mane

The Senegalese is expected to start, and the Etihad Stadium is a familiar hunting ground for the former Liverpool forward.

With Liverpool, Mane played 19 games against the Citizens and emerged a winner in seven of those games but lost as many.

The Africa Cup of Nations winner managed to score 10 goals and provide 12 assists for Liverpool against the Manchester club. Among active players, only former Liverpool teammate Mohamed Salah has more (11 in 19).

Mane’s speed and precision in the final third are expected to pose a challenge to Guardiola’s defenders.

Leroy Sane

The German worked with Guardiola for four years before he moved to the Allianz Arena.

In the current Champions League season, he has scored four goals and provided two assists in six games, and this points to how Sane can be dangerous to the Citizens.

Sane is Bayern's top scorer in this season's Champions League, with four goals.

After a controversial move to Bayern, the Portuguese returns to the Etihad with the hope of facing his former side and picking up a win.

He, however, faces stiff competition from French international Benjamin Pavard at right-back.

Joshua Kimmich

He played under Guardiola while the Spaniard was in charge at Bayern Munich.

He has been impressive whether he plays as a right-back or as a defensive midfielder, and this could give the Bavarians an advantage over City.

While mostly playing in deep midfield, Kimmich has registered three assists in the Champions League for the German champions.

How does Tuchel fare against Guardiola?

Having been fired unceremoniously by Chelsea, Tuchel returns to England with a different ambition: to beat City and establish a first-leg advantage.

Although Guardiola leads the head-to-head 6-3, the former Borussia Dortmund coach masterminded three consecutive wins against City while with the Blues.

Tuchel has also won his last two meetings with Guardiola in cup competition. His only knockout game defeat to the former Bayern coach was on penalties in the 2015-16 DFB Cup final.

Meanwhile, Bayern – the six-time European champions - have won five of their last six Champions League knockout ties against English opposition, perhaps an advantage to Tuchel.

Guardiola’s main striking weapon is expected to be Erling Haaland. But here is a challenge; Haaland scored five goals in seven meetings with Bayern as a Dortmund player but ended up on the losing team in all of them.
