The ex-Real Madrid defender makes a return to Brazil with Fluminense
Brazilian legend Marcelo has returned to where it all started by re-joining Rio de Janeiro side Fluminense after leaving Olympiacos after a mutual contract termination.
Marcelo returns home to Fluminense
Marcelo’s career started with Fluminense as a 13-year-old in the club’s youth team before jetting off to Real Madrid at the age of 19, and he has made a return to his boyhood club after a trying period in Greece that ended in him asking for his contract to be terminated four months early.
Marcelo joined Olympiacos after a trophy-laden 15-year spell at Real Madrid that saw him conquer Europe on five separate occasions. Marcelo’s arrival in Greece was greeted with much fanfare as he was touted to help take Olympiacos a step further in their development, but he ultimately failed to make his mark on the club.

Instead, he suffered several issues with Olympiacos that meant that he could not continue in Greece.
Marcelo struggled with several injuries and did not start a single Greek Superleague or Champions League game for Olympiacos, making eight appearances across those two tournaments. Still, he did start two Greek Cup matches in the round of 16 against Atromitos and scored three goals in those matches, meaning his time with Olympiacos was not a total failure.
His return to Brazil for the last stretch of his career is not unlike that of other Brazilian players who return home to finish their careers, and he will be hoping he has better luck with fitness back home than he did in Greece.
