Marcus Rashford acknowledged that he experienced a short loss of passion for the game after receiving racial taunts following England's defeat to Italy in the Euro 2020 final.

The England International was in tremendous form for Manchester United last season helping them finish in third position on the league table.

Rashford is not the first player to endure racist taunts from supporters; Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka also received hateful internet comments after missing penalties in the shootout loss in 2021.

He has now discussed how the incident affected him and how he nearly lost his passion for playing football as a result.

Rashford’s interview

Speaking to Gary Neville for the Overlap in collaboration with Sky Bet as reported by Daily Mail, the Man United and England player admitted that the taunts continued to bother him after the competition.

Rashford said, “I maybe lost my love for football a little bit [after being racially abused following Euro 2020], it was not for a long period of time.

“My shoulders were also down for a couple of months, and that's probably when it was playing on my mind a little bit more.

“After that, it was fine. I was desperate to get playing again in a United shirt – I love to just play football and as soon as I did that, I wanted to play for England again.”

After the Euros, Rashford had a challenging season after missing the beginning of the season due to shoulder surgery.

He returned from injury and only scored four goals in 25 Premier League games, costing Man United the opportunity to play in the Champions League.

However, In 2022–23, the 25-year-old had the best season of his career, tallying 30 goals in 56 games, thanks to the hiring of Erik Ten Hag as Man United's manager.

He received a new five-year contract earning £300,000 per week as compensation for his excellent play, pledging his future to the Red Devils through the year 2028.
