The veteran tactician is eyeing a win on Wednesday which will return the Brewers to the summit of the FKFPL table

Tusker FC head coach Robert Matano is wary of the physicality of Wazito FC even as he hopes to claim a victory and assume the Football Kenya Federation Premier League (FKFPL) leadership on Wednesday.

The Brewers were handed a boost when fellow title challengers Gor Mahia threw away a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 with Posta Rangers on Sunday and Tusker, who beat Kenya Police FC 1-0 on Saturday, can move to the summit with a win against Wazito in midweek.

However, Matano does not expect it to be an easy match even if Wazito are second from bottom with their last win coming on January 25.

“I pray that we maintain the same consistency and we will get points,” Matano said ahead of Wednesday’s match.

“We still need more, we have 11 matches to go. We will continue working hard. Wazito are a good, physical team and determined. They also have experienced players but we will plan for them.”

Tusker are the form team in the league, having won five straight games to claw back Gor’s lead, with K’Ogalo dropping four points over that period. Matano’s men have been putting pressure on Gor as they bid to retain their title and seem to be hitting form just at the right time.

What’s more impressive about the reigning league champions is that they have kept it tight at the back, conceding just one goal in their five-match winning run, which has acted as a base for their positive results.

Gor occupy top spot with 53 points from 25 matches with second-placed Tusker on 51, with a game in hand, which will be played on Wednesday.

The two teams have made for a fascinating league contest since the season started, Tusker setting the pace early in the campaign before Gor took over but the Brewers are now the side on a positive run and it will be interesting to see how K’Ogalo responds.
